Task 1

For my short film i have created a mind map for what i can do with the short films and this is what i got.

Editing

Once the short film has been made i will have to edit it.I have thought of a few ways that i could here are my ideas:
.Using special effects to exaggerate parts of the film. This editing would be most useful for a sci-fi film.
.Transitions between scenes.Helpful for all types of movies.
.Green screen
.Changing the colour of the shots.Would be helpful for a classic mystery film.
.Speed up or slow down a shot to add to it.
I will also need to create a dvd menu to meet the requirements to do this i will use photoshop to create my dvd menu design and then use dvd studio pro to actually create it.

Green screen editing and experimentations

Genres

Some ideas i came up with for the genre is
.Comedy
.Romance
.Horror/Thriller
.Crime
.Mystery
In the end we decided to have our short film as a crime/mystery film.Because of this we will need to think about the genre conventions for a film like this e.g. since this is a mystery film there will have to be a detective or someone to solve the case, or since this is a crime film there will have to be a murder and a murderer.

Equipment

For equipment i might use
.Green screen for backgrounds
.50 frames camera to record it
.lighting for effect
.microphones to make someone louder
.Camera kit

Dialogue

For dialogue i could use
.Actual voices
.Sound effects
.Ambient noises
To meet the requirements there will also have to be a script for the dialogue to cue narrative and actors e.g. when a sound effect should be used or when someone is supposed to speak.

Location

For locations i could go to
.The studio to use the green screen for the location
.On the college site
.Outside the college e.g.town, public or the streets
.The radio studio

My thoughts

Personally i think the idea of making a short film is a brilliant one.Having the film 5 to 10 minutes long is a reasonable amount for a short film.I think writing the script may be the hardest part as none of us are professional script writers and we have to make it be interesting.I'm not sure yet if the filming process will go into to spare time.

Audio production research

We have researched the different types audio production to see the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Makes sure that when using mic's to use headphones.
This is a boom mic and it needs to be set to the mic setting. If you use channel 1 and input 1 then channel and input 2 must be turned off. With the boom mic the sound input can reach the white line but if it hit the red bar then it is too loud and will cause crackling which disrupts the sound.

This is a wireless mic and must be set to the line setting. The wireless mic is AA battery powered. Both wireless mic's must reach the same frequency to work

This is a handheld mic.The handheld mic slots onto the top of the camera. To delete footage go to menu, others, system, quick format, execute and yes. To record hit record once then audio levels will come up so you can change them.

This is called genesys. This is the production layout for recording voice.

This is where you can adjust the volume and change the presenter and guest mic.

To create a voice(recording)production you click new,category-voice,name it,press ok and put the presenter and guest mic midway.

Then record, save,go to system, click export, wav file, save to desktop then just drag to a USB drive.

Overall i would have to say that i think the wireless mic will be best for us to  use in the short film as it can be carried around easily,is easy to use as you just set them to the same frequency and clip it on you.I also think that a boom mic would also be useful for our short film as it would be good as we could keep it out of shot.

Short film research

I have done some research on short films by watching some this is what i found.

The short film interpretation was created by hollywood stuntman Lin Oeding and shows a couple walking back from watching a film who encounter three thugs who have been reading the art of war try to take money from them but are defeated by the them as they have misinterpreted them. The film closes with the guy in the couple quoting from the book"if you are ignorant of the enemy or yourself you will surely be defeated."

Personally i thought that the story itself was lacking as the entire story was a couple leaving a movies and someone tries to mug them but it was made up for in the action giving it its thriller genre. The book itself is referenced many times throughout the film making me believe that the film tries to give of that message of how you interpret things. In the short film there was a lack of special effects but it was made up for in the action.

From this film a have got the idea that maybe with our short film we could try to include a message or include quotes from a book.

Suburbia is a short film written and directed by Antonio OreƱa-Barlin,although it seems to owe a lot to a scene from the feature film Elephant by Gus Van Sant, about a mass high-school shooting. In Suburbia, also inspired by a real event, it is a normal weekday when a man and his girlfriend are visiting a florists. However, when the man thinks he hears shots being fired, he cannot help but seek to find the cause.

I thought the story was quite interesting as it was based off of a real event and it kept you intrigued every second.

From this film i have the idea of us basing it on a real life event.

Visual production research

This is a tripod. It is used to hold and rotate the camera. It can be adjusted to how hight it can go through clamps for convenience to the person operation the camera.

This is where the battery is put.

This is where you slide and lock the camera into position. This is done by loosening the screws so it can slide on the tightening them.

This is what the camera attached to the tripod looks like.

This is the on and off switch.

This is the part of the camera that allows you to see what the camera sees or is recording.

With the camera itself you can adjust it's brightness, the tint and the white balance.

Genre codes and conventions

Scream opening part 1

Scream opening part 2

Scream opening part 3

I analysed the opening sequence for Scream to look at its genre conventions. From it you can tell that it is a horror and the conventions of a horror genre film is that there is always a  creepy killer usually wearing a mask or something to cover his or her face, usually at night, a weapon like a knife or gun, a chase scene where the victim tries to escape.

I also analysed the film jingle all the way which is a Christmas comedy film. The conventions of a comedy film is that funny things happen. It is also a Christmas film where the conventions are that there is usually something to do with santa  and there is usually a Christmas miracle.

So considering that our short film will be a mystery/crime the code and conventions would include a crime that needs to be solved, some one to solve the crime, dramatic music, suspects and a culprit to the crime.

DVD menu

For our short film we have got to make a DVD menu for our criteria so i have done some research on different DVD menus to look for ideas for our short film.

This is the DVD menu from the movie Cars.In the background it has footage of Lightning McQueen racing. The front shows an image of the piston cup.The buttons include playing the movie, some Cars animated shorts, some bonus features, screen selection and a set up menu which gives the option of subtitles.

This is a DVD menu for the movie Shrek. In it you can see a book with the four main characters. The buttons our put in an old timely fashion to match the medieval time period of the film. The buttons involves play movie, scene selection, audio setup which includes unique commentary and bonus.

From this research i now have a few idea about what i could include in my DVD menu e.g. include some special features like some bloopers, include a bit of footage in the background and add a play button.
